Kauai Elopement Guide

Updated for 2024

Anywhere you say “I do” is sure to be magical on the garden island.

Thinking of getting married on a stunning tropical island?

You’ve come to the right place then!!! Kauai is by FAR my favorite island. Kauai is home to the most diverse island scenery I’ve ever experienced! Whether you plant to host a destination wedding for your family and friends to attend (and to turn into their own vacations!) or whether you plan to have an intimate ceremony with just you two, your photographer, and an officiant - I’m here for it all!

While it only takes approximately 2 hours to drive from one end of the island to the other, this tiny island is jam-packed with the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen! It feels like you’re on another planet with all the different landscapes Kauai has to offer within such small distances. Jungles, waterfalls, beaches, rugged coastlines, cliffs, the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and more!

Or maybe you’re reading this and you are already married but planning a trip to Kauai and just looking for the best places to go! Are you honeymooning? Or is this an anniversary trip? Might I suggest hiring a photographer to tag along for a day of adventures with you?!

Let’s get started! In this post I’ll go over my favorite locations to say “I do” in Kauai, along with my favorite activities and places to eat!

Kauai, often referred to as the "Garden Isle," captivates visitors with its lush landscapes, breathtaking natural beauty, and a tranquil ambiance. Nestled in the Hawaiian archipelago, this enchanting island boasts diverse microclimates, ranging from the verdant and waterfall-laden north to the sun-kissed, golden beaches of the south. Towering sea cliffs, emerald valleys, and the majestic Waimea Canyon, often dubbed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," showcase the island's geological wonders. Kauai's tropical climate ensures warm temperatures year-round, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a serene escape. Whether navigating the scenic Na Pali Coast, discovering hidden waterfalls, or simply unwinding on its pristine shores, Kauai beckons travelers to embrace its idyllic charm and experience the essence of paradise.

Where to Elope in Kauai

NATIONAL TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS

Five botanical gardens over 2,000 acres filled with native Hawaiian plant species! Lush, tall, jungle walls and secret waterfalls nestled in the gardens.

SHIPWRECK BEACH + CLIFFS

A gorgeous sandy beach with the perfect cliffs overlooking the ocean for a sunset elopement. If you book me, I will show you more secret local spots in this area!!!

SECRET (KAUAPEA) BEACH

A less popular beach on the northeast side of the island with lava rock and white sand beaches.

POLIHALE BEACH

One of the closest beaches where you can see the cliffs of the Na’Pali coast - but access is a bit more difficult. You will need a high clearance vehicle and you’ll need to make sure the weather is good before making the journey on this long and sandy road.

KE’E BEACH

One of the closest beaches where you can see the cliffs of the Na’pali coast - and with easy access.

Getting There

Fly into Lihue Airport and rent a car to get around the island.

Climate & Time of Year

Kauai has a tropical climate characterized by warm temperatures and consistent trade winds. The climate on Kauai is generally mild and pleasant throughout the year. Here are some key features of Kauai's climate:

Temperature: The temperatures in Kauai usually range between 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C) year-round. It's relatively consistent, with only slight variations between seasons.

Rainfall: Kauai is known for its diverse microclimates, and some areas receive more rainfall than others. The north and east sides of the island tend to be wetter, while the south and west sides are drier. The central mountainous region, including Mount Waialeale, is one of the wettest places on Earth.

Wet Season: The wet season in Kauai typically occurs from November to March. During this period, you might experience more frequent rain showers, especially on the windward (northeastern) side of the island.

Dry Season: The dry season, from April to October, tends to have less rainfall. However, it's important to note that Kauai's climate is generally moist, and some rain showers can occur at any time of the year.

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Kauai depends on your preferences and activities. However, many visitors find that the months from April to June and September to November offer a good balance. During these periods, the weather is often pleasant, and there are fewer crowds compared to the peak tourist season (July and August).

Things to Do

Tour the Na’Pali coast by boat or helicopter (personal preference - the boat was the best!) By boat you get to see turtles and dolphins, and you also get to swim, snorkel, and boat through caves! Blue Ocean Adventure Tours I would 10/10 recommend!

Hike in Waimea Canyon

Hike in the Na’Pali coastline

Explore all the beaches

Swim in a waterfall (or 2 or 3!)

Watch surfers + swing from jungle vines near Hanalei River

Snorkel! Make sure to read up on the seasonality of snorkeling here and to see which side of the island is safest.

Where to Eat

The further away you can stay from the super touristy, high end resort areas, the better! This includes anywhere around Princeville and Poipu. You’ll find that the beaches are super over crowded in these areas, and that the food is SUPER expensive. Yes, anywhere in Hawaii the food is going to cost more, but they definitely uncharge in these two areas in particular.

My favorite areas to eat were - Wailua, Kapaa, and Waimea.

Java Kai: amazing coffee, breakfast, and smoothies

Imua Coffee Roasters: super delicious coffee and walking distance to the beach!

Eat Healthy Kauai: vegan and gluten free breakfasts, yummy smoothie bowls too

Matcha-Ya: smoothies and smoothie bowls

Kauai Juice: healthy juices and milks

The Fish Express: the best poke bowls!!!

Holey Grail Donuts: vegan donuts

Kenji Burgers: amazing burgers!!

Coconut Corner: these smoothies are SO fresh and delicious!

Anakes Juice Bar: BEST smoothie bowls on island!!!!!!
