Tulum, QROO
I have the most experience in Tulum, so you’ll find more information about this area than the rest.
The food: Tulum is known for their vegan, healthy, FRESH, unique, and luxurious restaurant options! It’s quite the foodie heaven! My personal advice is to avoid the most popular restaurants that you probably googled. They are ridiculously overpriced & Americanized. If that’s your thing, you do you!!! But I found I enjoyed the local options MUCH more, and they were crazy affordable! However, here’s some of my favorite places on the main beach strip that are absolutely worth it (also I should note that I am vegan and gluten free): Matcha Mama, & Raw Love & The Real Coconut. Once you get into the main town area, here’s our favorites: El Canaston, Burrito Amor, Botanica, and all the food carts! The food carts are the best for dinner!
The beaches: you can totally pay to get access to a fancy/stylish boho resort beach for the day, OR you can go left at the round about down Nuevo Durango Coba and there’s a few free public beaches down there. Definitely get there early to grab parking and a good spot to lay!
The cenotes: did you know that there are over 5,000 Cenotes in Tulum alone?! It’s phenomenal! A Cenote is a sinkhole that’s been flooded with rain and ground water. These Cenotes showcase some of the deepest and clearest water you will probably ever see! And they are home to so much wildlife. We saw tons of turtles, bats, and fish! Our favorites were Cenote Calavera and Gran Cenote. If you had more time & money put aside to exploring these magical sea caves, you could spend a whole week swimming and snorkeling in them! The most popular ones will definitely be filled with tourists come the afternoon, so make sure to go in the morning or just before they close. Pro tip: pack your own snorkels to save money! Most of these cost between $20-30 USD.
Gran Cenote is my absolute favorite
Dos Ojos
Calavera
Escondido & Crystal
Zacil-Ha
The architecture & overall vibes: basically Tulum is an instagram heaven. It’s kind of insane how cool all the hotels & airbnbs are here! Everywhere you look you will want to take a photo! Everyone is so laid back and island-vibes, it’s my favorite. Can’t wait to vacation here again!!!
Weather: in general, the weather here is pretty consistently mid 70’s-high 80’s. Talk about the PERFECT temperature range!!!
Seaweed: seaweed is a pretty big problem from June-August. Thick piles of seaweed coat the entire beach every day during the summer unfortunately! Many hotels will stay on top of cleaning the beaches daily.
Transportation: if you are only planning on staying in Tulum Centro and the beach strip, it would save you money to book a taxi ahead of time for to and from the airport and then rent a moped while in town. Many places also have bicycles for use! If you are wanting to explore further away, you’ll want to get a rental car. But be aware that there is a mandatory rental car insurance fee that is around $500. Some credit cards like Amex cover this though, so be sure to check if your credit card does.
Where to stay: I prefer to stay in Tulum Centro to save money. The beach strip is much much more expensive. And my favorite restaurants are all in the Centro area!
Best Places in Mexico to Get Married
Cancun, QROO
Weather
Most meteorologists describe weather in Cancun Quintana Roo as a tropical climate with muggy and rainy seasons from May to October. It’s relatively dry from November to April, but it can still rain on occasion and you’ll definitely get some wind and clouds in December and January. However, beware of the hurricane season from June to November with peaks from August to October.
Swimming
Swimming around Cancun is relatively safe. There are a lot of lifeguard stations around, so be mindful of the flags. Black means don’t go in the water, and Red means to be very cautious. Overall, the snorkeling isn’t the best because it’s more sand than reef, but there’s lots of marine life to see!
Sayulita
Weather
Sayulita has a Mexican tropical climate with somewhat rainy summers and dry winters. But overall, it doesn’t rain much in Sayulita and the temperatures can stay below 90 even in the height of summer. Most say the best time of year to go is between December and April. Sayulita does have a hurricane season during the summer months, but it’s very rare for one to actually hit the coast.
Swimming
Swimming near Sayulita is generally considered safe as long as you are mindful of the lifeguard warnings. The most important thing to consider is the reports of water contamination in the area. You’re better off swimming to the north and south of the bay to avoid any issues.
Baja & Cabo
Weather
The Baja Peninsula and Cabo San Lucas have great temperatures year round. It usually never goes above 95 degrees and never below 55 and those are in the most extreme cases. Most people say the best time to go is from May to June. For wedding planning, be aware of the Pacific hurricane season that runs from May to November which is usually the only time you’ll get a tropical storm here.
Swimming
In Baja and near Cabo, it’s important to distinguish between swimmable and unswimmable beaches because the deep drop offs create strong currents and waves. They have a system of lifeguards and flags set up, but it’s not recommended—and you could endanger your life—if you decide to go off and try to swim in undesignated areas. Be very careful and very mindful of the warnings here.
