Adventurous + Moody Engagement Session at Abiqua Falls

There are some locations that demand a little extra grit, and Abiqua Falls is one of them—in the most magical way. Hidden deep in the Oregon forest, this waterfall feels like its own world, untouched and wild. When my couple told me they dreamed of a moody romantic engagement session where they could fully immerse themselves in the water, I knew this was going to be one of those shoots I’d never forget.

The Journey to Abiqua Falls

Reaching Abiqua isn’t your typical stroll through the woods. It’s a mini-adventure—exactly why I love shooting here. We started with some off-roading through winding and steep forest roads. From there, we began the descent: steep slopes, loose soil, and a series of ropes that guide you safely down into the canyon.

It’s the kind of trail that gets your adrenaline up just enough to make the final reward even sweeter.

Once you reach the bottom, everything shifts. The air cools. The sound of the waterfall starts to echo through the canyon walls. A lush, mossy trail leads alongside the river, with ferns and branches arching overhead like they’re welcoming you in.

It’s moody, it’s cinematic, it’s Oregon in its purest form.

Then, the canyon opens up and there it is—Abiqua. Towering basalt columns, mist drifting through the air, and the waterfall roaring down into a deep pool. It’s almost impossible not to gasp the first time you see it. My couple stood there hand in hand, soaking it in before the real fun began.

Getting in the Water

They told me from the start: “We want to get in the water. Like… fully in.”
Which instantly made my photographer heart scream with joy.

So we went for it.

They waded into the water until they were waist-deep, then chest-deep, and finally completely submerged. The mist clung to their skin, their clothes were soaked, and everything about it felt raw and passionate. The shots we captured? Moody, romantic, intimate, and impossibly beautiful. The kind of images that show not just a location, but a connection.
