Capturing Couples Authentically: Why Your Personality Comes First in My Photography

One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is creating images that feel uniquely yours. Every couple I work with brings their own energy, their own story, and their own vision — and my job isn’t to impose my taste, it’s to serve theirs.

This summer, I had the joy of photographing a golden, glowy sunset engagement session that perfectly illustrates this philosophy. The light was warm, the air was soft, and the couple was completely themselves — playful, tender, and full of laughter. And that’s exactly how we made sure their photos felt.

Step 1: Capture Them Authentically

The very first thing I ask every couple is: how would you describe your relationship?

  • Are you playful, goofy, and silly?

  • More romantic, soft, and sweet?

  • Artistic, edgy, and stoic?

Knowing this shapes everything: from how we move, to the directions I give you, to the type of interaction I encourage. Authenticity isn’t just a preference — it’s a guiding principle. Couples who are truly themselves in front of the camera get photos that feel alive, electric, and real.

Step 2: Ask About Their Vision

Next, I ask more practical but equally important questions: what do you want your photos to look and feel like?

  • Wide angle landscapes or intimate close-ups?

  • A mix of everything?

  • Artsy touches like grain, motion blur, or lens flare, or do you exclusively prefer more traditional portraits?

Some couples love photos that feel editorial and cinematic. Others want simple, classic images they know they’ll treasure forever. Some want a perfect blend — artsy but still romantic. Understanding these preferences ensures the final gallery truly belongs to them.

Step 3: Put Your Creative Bias Aside

As photographers, it can be tempting to lean into the styles we love or are most comfortable shooting. But the truth is, we’re there to serve the couple, not the other way around. Their personalities, their vision, their comfort — that is what should drive the session. My goal is always to bring their ideas to life while adding a touch of my expertise to enhance the experience, not dominate it. When you prioritize your couple’s authenticity over your own creative preferences, you end up with images that are not only beautiful but deeply meaningful.

Why This Philosophy Matters

Whether it’s an engagement session, an elopement, or a full wedding day, this approach ensures every gallery tells a story that truly belongs to the couple.

  • Laughter that feels real

  • Directing that feel natural

  • Details and angles that reflect their personality

This golden summer sunset session was a perfect example — every shot captured them the way they truly wanted, in a season of time they’ll never forget. And that’s why I do what I do: to create images that are a true reflection of each and every couple.
